HEMPCRETE HOUSE

A house in the bush on the south coast of WA utilising hempcrete masonry: a mix of hemp and lime binder to create wonderfully natural and breathable internal walls.

A strong client driven sustainability agenda on this house includes northern orientation and calculated eave overhangs for winter sun heating and summer shading; an insulated concrete slab for thermal mass; no painted surfaces externally and minimal internally, including a grape skin based concrete sealer; a super efficient wood burning space heater from New Zealand; stand alone solar power system: greywater treatment system and storage of rain water with provision for a future stormwater overflow fed pond.

The design also includes an outdoor bath concealed beneath the eastern deck for late night star-lit soaking.
